Seeing the growing trend of digital economy and O2O (Online-to-Offline) application, Chinese Taipei collaborated with Viet Nam to co-host the “APEC SME O2O Forum I” on April 26 at Sheraton Saigon Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. 15 innovative tech start-ups from 10 APEC economies showcased their products and services in adopting O2O to more than 100 participants including the APEC officials, business elites and international tech giants, such as Google and Trend Micro. (Viet Nam) stood out and won the ticket to join the “APEC SME O2O Summit & Best Practice Showcase”, to be held in Taipei on July 12-13 to meet more cross-border business opportunities and shape the future of O2O.

O2O Innovation”, the key to success in digital and quality economy

During the forum, Ms. Mei-Hsueh Lin, Deputy Director General of Small and Medium Enterprise Administration (SMEA) of Chinese Taipei, Mr. John Andersen, Chair of APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Working Group (SMEWG), Mr. Nguyen Hoa Cuong, Deputy Director-General of Agency for Enterprise Development, Ministry of Planning and Investment of Viet Nam and Mr. Jerry Clavesillas, Director of the Bureau of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise Development of the Philippines gave their opening remarks to encourage the dynamic development of O2O and digital economy. In her remarks, Ms. Lin expressed her appreciation to the support and participation from member economies and the hospitality of Viet Nam. She emphasized that O2O and digital economy has extensively changed the way SMEs doing their business and brought them both new opportunities and challenges. In response to the new chances and challenges, it is critical to understand the four key O2O innovative applications, namely, “Mobile Commerce”, Sharing Economy”, “Collaborative Industry” and Next Generation Innovation” to stand out in the new digital era.

In his remarks, Mr. Cuong also pointed out that the rapid development of Internet and online payment, which is one of the key components of O2O, has become an important strategic marketing and selling approach with huge market potential in the APEC region. In Viet Nam, there are more than 45 million internet users and more than 34 million smart phone device users. This is in fact pushing the Vietnamese SMEs shifted from traditional business model to O2O. Therefore, he expressed his gratitude for Chinese Taipei to organize this meaningful event and his fully support to the APEC SME O2O Initiative co-proposed by Chinese Taipei and the Philippines.

All VIPs and speakers gathered together to promote the O2O opportunities and the coming digital business era. 

Later in the afternoon, the demo session came after to serve as the platform for start-ups and SMEs showcasing their business ideas. Two teams from Chinese Taipei, iStaging, the champion of 2015 APEC Global Challenge and EZTABLE, a company offering 24-hour online restaurant reservation service, joined with other 13 teams from Viet Nam, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, China, Mexico, Chile and Peru demonstrated how they leverage the O2O to face the fast-growing trend of digital economy and challenge the existing rules. As the result, from Viet Nam showed their innovative solution for travellers and won the ticket to fly to Taipei to attend the“APEC SME O2O Summit & Best Practice Showcase” in July.

Global tech giants working together to reshape the world by O2O

“APEC SME O2O Forum I”in Ho Chi Minh City is the first of the O2O serial events under Chinese Taipei and the Philippines’ ”New Era of Growth for APEC SMEs through O2O Business Model Initiative”. Later in June, an international training workshop will be held in Taipei in collaboration with Computex, a well-known international ICT Expo organized by Chinese Taipei. In July, the highlight of this series, “APEC SME O2O Summit & Best Practice Showcase” will be held in Taipei as well, and there will be the “APEC SME O2O Forum II” to be held in Lima, Peru during the 23rd SME ministerial meeting (SMEMM) this September. These events will be joined by global tech giants, Intel, Siemens, Acer and Trend Micro to work together reshaping our future world by discovering more cutting-edge applications in O2O toward the digital era. By doing so, Chinese Taipei and the APEC believe, we can help startups and SMEs step forward to meet the quality and inclusive growth.
